Star Prize

We love to see how our horses are enjoying life after racing.

This is Star Prize. She retired from racing this year, and won last year under Faye at Bath.

What a transformation she has made! She is enjoying her second career competing in the dressage and showing fields and looks like she is making quite the impression.

Lesson 1: History

A bit of a history lesson for a Thursday morning.

This is our newest addition, ‘Porto Ercole’, being ridden by Faye. She was bought last week at the Goffs HIT Sale. Porto Ercole ran twice in Ireland for Ger Lyons. She is by first-season-sire Caravaggio and out of the Gr. 1 - placed mare, Euphrasia.

Whoever named this filly deserves a prize for their research and this is how it came about:

Caravaggio was a famous Italian painter. In July 1610, he left Naples on a boat carrying three of his paintings and was supposed to arrive in Porto Ercole. Mistaken for a criminal near Rome, he abandoned his boat with his paintings and continued to Porto Ercole on foot. He arrived exhausted and died shortly after, but the cause of his death was unknown. He is remembered in Porto Ercole by a path of the great artists work.

Middleham Park

What an achievement!

We are proud to say our very own Woodlands Charm has contributed to this tally, with her two wins at Ripon and Catterick this year.

Newest Recruit.

We were busy at the final major yearling sale of the year yesterday at Tattersalls.

We made one purchase and this was a lovely looking son Showcasing, boasting a pedigree full of black-type performers.

The colt is the first foal out of the unraced Bated Breath mare, Impede. She is from a Juddmonte family and a half-sister to no less than 5 Group performers.

Yearling Update.

Although there was only evening racing at Chelmsford to keep us occupied on this cold Monday evening, we had reason to be entertained.

Above, trained by Stuart Williams, won the feature Class 2 Handicap, off a mark of 94. Above is the half-brother to our very own Wootton Bassett yearling filly, out of the Acclamation mare, Broken Applause.

‘Whoopie’ is certainly a looker!

Kashtan

This a yearling colt by Temple Stakes winner, Pearl Secret. He is out of the two-time winning mare, Kashtan, making him a half-brother to our very own two-time scorer Maybe Even Never.

We hope this colt is just as lucky for his owners. You can definitely see the resemblance between the two of them, with Maybe Even Never pictured here as a yearling, only just broken.

Clipping

It’s that time of year again, the clippers are out! Here is Nigel clipping our Cotai Glory two-year-old, Totes Emosh. Luckily this isn’t the finish article, I hope this haircut doesn’t embarrass her too much, I think we’d all be worried if Nigel walked towards us with a pair of clippers!

Long-Reining

This is our Sioux Nation colt being long-reined by Jim. Jim does a great job of lunging and long-reining all our horses before they are ridden; it is an integral part in the breaking process. All of our yearlings have a very good grounding before they are ridden, being handled, lunged and long-reined plenty.

This Sioux Nation colt has just been down the road with Jim and is heading back to his stable. He is taking everything in his stride and the next step is to get on his back! Any volunteers?
